Competitor research: what they advertise and where you fit — MelonAds

Competitor research in MelonAds: competitors' live ads on Meta and Google, their promises, a comparison with your offer, and recommended angles to test.

What you need first

A finished strategy report. Competitor research lives inside the report and is built from it.

The names of the competitors you know, and their website or Facebook page if you have them.

1. Find the competitor research

Press "Strategy" in the menu, and on a strategy whose report is ready press "View report". Scroll to the end of the report, past the audio summary. That's where the "Competitor Research" card is.

Press "Find competitors". The search itself is free.

2. Confirm the competitor list

The app suggests a list. Competitors you wrote in the questionnaire, under "Main competitors", are marked "You entered". Ones AI added are marked "AI suggested".

Go through the list before you continue: fix a name, add a website or Facebook page, and remove anyone who isn't really competing with you. A report can cover up to 5 competitors. When the list is right, press "Produce competitor report". The report costs credits, and the price is on the button.

3. Wait for the collection

The app collects information on each competitor, then analyses the findings. The screen shows how many competitors have been collected so far. It takes a few minutes.

If processing gets stuck, press "Continue processing" or "Try again". You don't pay twice for the same report.

4. Read each competitor's card

Under "The competitors we checked" there's a card for each one: "Main promise", "Audience signals", "Offer and price" and "Ad longevity", plus short tags for the angles and formats they use. A short note at the end of the card separates what was actually observed from what is an assumption, so you know what you can rely on.

Below that is "Ads we found" on Meta and Google, with the image or video, the text, how many days the ad has been running, and a "View" link. We have no access to any competitor's budget or results. An ad that has run for a long time is only a hint that it works for them, not proof.

5. Read the comparison with you

The "Comparison against you" section sets "What they solve" against "What you solve", then "White space in the market" and "Risks to watch". The white space is the part that matters: what no competitor is saying that you can.

At the end are "Recommended angles to test" and "Recommended ads to test". These are ideas for your own ads, built from the gap between you and your competitors.

6. Turn it into your own ads

The Copywriting Studio doesn't read the competitor report on its own, so bring the angle over by hand. Copy one recommended angle, open "Copywriting Studio", expand "Your own instruction" and paste it there. For example: "Stress that we book appointments the same day", if that's the white space the comparison found.

Test one angle at a time, so you know what worked. Once the campaign runs, check "My campaigns" to see which angle brought cheaper leads.

Tips

List the competitors you actually run into in the questionnaire. That way the list starts with them, not only with AI suggestions.

Add each competitor's Facebook page name. It helps find the ads they run on Meta.

Go to "White space in the market" first. That's where the promise nobody else makes is.

Market moved? At the end of the report there's "Produce a new competitor report". A new report costs credits like the first one.

Common mistakes

Copying a competitor's ad. The point is to find what they aren't saying, not to say the same thing.

Reading an ad's age as proof of success. We don't have their budget or results, and an ad can run for a long time simply because nobody switched it off.

Leaving businesses on the list that don't really compete with you. Every irrelevant competitor muddies the comparison.

How much does competitor research cost?

Finding competitors is free. Producing the report costs credits, once per report, and the price is on the "Produce competitor report" button. Retrying after a glitch doesn't charge again.

Can I see how much competitors spend on ads?

No. There's no access to any competitor's budget or results. You see their public ads, when they went up and how long they've been running.

Why were no ads found for a competitor?

They may not be advertising right now, or the name and page entered don't match the page they advertise from. Try adding the exact Facebook page name and producing a new report. If the report says it's based on competitor websites only, no ad lookup ran this time.

Can I run competitor research without a strategy?

No. The research compares competitors with your offer, so it lives inside the strategy report and opens only once the report is ready.
